Penn National Reunion Shaping Up As Part of 25th Racing Legends Reunion & Car Show presented by Reading Eagle and WEEU 830 AM
READING, PA - Anticipation is growing for the first-ever Penn National Speedway Reunion to be held on Sat., Feb. 27 as part of the 25th annual Racing Legends Reunion & Car Show presented by Reading Eagle and WEEU 830 AM.
The show is set for Feb. 21-27 at the Fairgrounds Square Mall located on 5th Street Highway in Reading, Pa., the former site of the famed Reading Fairgrounds Speedway.
Show management has been working to reach out to former Penn National Speedway racers, officials and personalities. The Grantville, Pa., oval hosted its final season in 1996.
"The response so far has been phenomenal," said event organizer Brett Deyo. "We've contacted drivers including Billy Pauch, Rich Tobias Jr., Elvin Felty, Davey Wenger, Tom Mayberry and many others. They all have fond memories of Penn National and are looking to share some stories during the Reunion."
Racers from all divisions at Penn National are welcome to attend.
"Because this is our first event, we are gathering contact information, so we are encouraging former Penn National drivers to let us know if they're interested in being a part of the reunion," Deyo said.
"We are looking to include racers from all the various divisions that participated at Penn National."
The Penn National Reunion will take place on stage beginning at 5 p.m. on Feb. 27, the final day of the weeklong show.
Interested parties should contact Brett Deyo, preferably by e-mail at Deyo99H@aol.com, or by phone at: 845.728.2781.
The restored Glenn Hyneman-owned, Craig Von Dohren-driven No. 126 Keystone Racing 1983 Olsen Eagle that turned heads at the recent Motorsports 2010 presented by VP's Street Blaze 100 show in Oaks, Pa., will be part of a tribute to Penn National at the show. New Jersey's Kevin Eyres owns the car.
Former Tri-Track racer Kerry Meitzler will display his family-owned No. 3k Tobias mount that the Kutztown, Pa., driver ran during the track's final season. The car has been in storage for 15 years.
During the week of Feb. 21-27, the mall will be jammed with current-day race cars representing many divisions and sanctioning groups, vintage and restored race cars, speedway exhibits and displays and vendors. Drivers of today and yesterday will be on hand periodically throughout the show for on-stage interviews and autograph sessions.
Among the show highlights are the 600Scene.com Small Car Roundtable (Tuesday evening, Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m.), the annual Reading Fairgrounds Speedway Reunion (Friday evening, Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m.) and the aforementioned Penn National Speedway Reunion (Saturday afternoon, Feb. 27 at 5 p.m.).
Rich "Toby" Tobias Jr. will take the stage on Monday evening to discuss his affordable racing divisions, including the growing SpeedSTR Midget Series, as part of 'Open Wheel Night' at the show.
Show awards - including the first Don Marks Memorial Contribution to Motorsports Award - will be distributed during the popular BASH Racing Party to be held Friday night, Feb. 26 at the Temple Fire Company, just blocks from the mall, beginning at 9 p.m.
The BASH Party will feature music for dancing, a cash bar, racing movies (including 2009 footage from the Pennsylvania Dual-Track circuit) and plenty of bench racing.
Bert Jones, proprietor of Beer City located in Quakertown, Pa., has signed on as the awards sponsor for the BASH. Jones owns the No. 15 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series 358-Modified driven by Jason Hamilton at Grandview (Pa.) Speedway.
Lee Myles Transmissions Pennsylvania locations in Reading, Birdsboro, Allentown, Easton, Mt. Pocono & York will provide the sound for the BASH.
Tickets to the BASH are $10 and will be sold during the show and at the door.
Registration for the show is ongoing. Space is reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. Race teams and vendors should visit the show Web site at www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com for details.
Among the 2010 show exhibitors are Grandview Speedway, Big Diamond (Pa.) Raceway, Kutztown Fairgrounds (Pa.) Speedway, Thunder on the Hill Racing Series, URC, Reading Eagle, Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc., Speedway Entertainment (Slingshots and SpeedSTRs), Reading Fairgrounds Speedway Historical Society, Doug Borger's XCel 600 Modifieds, Gary Silverman Productions, Clyde Martin Memorial (Pa.) Speedway, the NEETS Enduro Series and the Montgomery County Quarter Midget Racing Club.
Vendors will be on hand selling national and local racing memorabilia, collectibles, racing DVDs and much more.
