Cozze & Sheppard Share Limelight In New Egypt 20's
New Egypt, NJ (August 4, 2007) - Frank Cozze of Wind Gap, PA and
Matt Sheppard of Waterloo, NY both visited victory lane on Saturday
night at the New Egypt Speedway. Cozze took the front end of the Twin
20's program for the DIRTcar Modifieds after grabbing the lead at the
halfway mark and then showing everyone the form that has come to be
expected from him. Sheppard then captured the nightcap when he
wrestled the lead away from Ron John Koczon in lapped traffic just 4
laps from the finish.
In the first feature Tom Carberry got off to a fast start from his
outside pole starting spot as he charged into the lead and began
pulling away from the field. Bob Drayton quickly made his presence
known as he caught Carberry and began to apply the pressure for the
lead. Carberry held him off despite a spirited battle between the two
until Cozze entered the scene. Cozze, who started 13th, was wasting
no time as he was into the top five by lap 6 and then ran down the
top 2 quickly. Just before halfway Cozze was able to slip under
Drayton and he quickly set his sights on the leader. Lap 10 saw Cozze
make the winning pass as he shot under Carberry coming off of turn
#2. Once in front, Cozze put on a clinic of driving in lapped traffic
as he went on to claim his third win of 2007, the 20th of his career.
Carberry held off Drayton pressure the entire race to take second
with Drayton coming home third. Ryan Godown took fourth with Jimmy
Horton coming back from a first lap tangle to finish fifth.
The second feature saw the top twelve inverted from the first feature
and this put Matt Sheppard on the pole. Many people thought this one
would be over from the start, but a lap two restart saw Ron John
Koczon prove everyone wrong as he raced around Sheppard and grabbed
the lead. These two drivers then put on a duel that had the crowd
into it as they cheered on the two. Koczon was up to every challenge
until lap 16 when lapped traffic came into play. As the traffic
became heavy, Sheppard used this to his advantage, choosing the right
groove and driving by for the lead. Sheppard then was flawless over
the final 4 laps as he posted his sixth win of the season. Koczon
took home a solid second, followed by Horton, Sam Martz and Ryan
The Sportsman 20 lap feature event saw a first time winner, as John
Salvatore, Jr. took the first of his career. Salvatore was the early
leader until 2007 Rookie champ Danny Bouc got by on lap 7. Bouc
looked strong and it appeared he may be able to get the first win of
his very young career, but it was not meant to be on this night as he
broke just 6 laps from the finish. This gave the lead back to a
strong running Salvatore who now had to hold back John McClelland and
Willie Osmun. Salvatore was able to remain smooth on a final lap
restart to post his first ever. McClelland came home second, with
Osmun getting third. Tommy Carberry, Jr. and last weeks winner John
Romano, Jr. rounded out the top five.
Al Cheney of Cranbury, NJ took the top honors in the 25 lap Super
Stock feature. Cheney raced quickly thru the field to grab the lead,
but then had to hold off point leader George Quinlan throughout the
second half of the event to post his fourth feature of the season,
the 18th of his career giving him sole posession of second place on
the all-time list. Quinlan took second, trailed by Mick Search, Kory
Fleming and Steve Davis.
In the 15 lap Outlaw Stock feature Gary Klimeczak won again
impressively as he raced to victory by a margin of half a lap. Rob
Longo and Brian Ludwig were a distant second and third. The Crate 1
Sportsman saw EJ Harrington grab his third win of the year over
Richie Cass Sr. and Pat Hires.

sponsored by Burnett Racing Engines. The racing will feature DIRTcar
