NEW WINNERS GRACE VICTORY LANE SUNDAY IN BIG DIAMOND RACEWAY ENDUROS
By Gary Lileck Forestville, PA – June 15, 2008 – Race number two of the Nutty Buddy Enduro Series, presented by Naftzinger’s Used Auto Parts and Detweiler’s 24 Hour Towing, was held this past Sunday at Big Diamond Raceway. Joey Zvorsky of Orwigsburg and Todd Morgan of Tower City each earned their first BDR Enduro victories.
Forty-one cars assembled for the 100-lap 6/8 cylinder contest. Chuck Detweiler led the opening 21 laps until his machine suffered a flat right front tire. Zvorsky made some quick maneuvers from his thirtieth starting spot and became the new race leader. Season opener winner Shawn Naftzinger, who began from thirty-first, moved past Zvorsky about a third of the way through the contest.
During the race’s second half, Naftzinger and Zvorsky staged a tremendous duel for victory. Zvorsky drove to the bottom of the speedway and passed Naftzinger through traffic on lap 84. Naftzinger fought back and reclaimed the lead on the next lap. As they continued to negotiate traffic, Zvorsky slashed to the inside of Naftzinger on lap 89 and repossessed the number one spot.
Zvorsky, a veteran stock car racer at Big Diamond, is a past feature winner in BDR’s Street Stock class. Zvorsky decided to climb back behind the wheel last season of his Chevy Impala #1 machine and has been strong since his return. He became the second winner in two races held this season.
Accomplished racer S. Naftzinger (Auburn) finished 1.287 seconds behind the race leader in the runner-up position. Thirty-fourth place starter Mike Reichert (New Ringgold), a three-time career Enduro winner, followed in the third position. Phil Levering (Parkerford) originally built his Pontiac Lemans in 1998 to drive in the Roadrunner division. He powered that same machine to a fourth place result, finishing on the lead lap. Chris Reichert (Orwigsburg) rebounded from an earlier race spin and rounded out the top five.
Jeremy Krauss led the 26-car Four Cylinder field to their green flag. Krauss showed the way for ten laps before his machine fell from the pace. Steve Wilson grabbed the lead on lap eleven and he was overtaken by BDR Friday night regular racer Chris Holland on the thirteenth tour. Meanwhile, newcomer Dave Bentley Jr. was screaming through the field from his twenty-fifth place starting spot.
Bentley, driving his #5x Saturn, glanced to the inside of Holland on lap 18. Bentley took complete control at the completion of the circuit. From this moment on, the race belonged to Bentley. He lapped the entire field by lap 50, set them two laps down on the 80th circuit, and buried them for three laps on the 94th tour. The 100-lap race was completed in less than forty-two minutes. In post race tech, however, Bentley’s machine failed an exhaust inspection and he was disqualified from the event.
Todd Morgan, a former BDR Street Stock competitor, executed a flawless race and ran within the top three during the event’s entire context. Morgan started eleventh behind the wheel of his Dodge Daytona #72x. Morgan captured his first career four cylinder enduro triumph.
Jeff Sheetz (Macungie), a two-time winner last season, finished second ahead of ’08 newcomer Paul Noll (Reading), who started fifteenth. Kevan Schaeffer (Orwigsburg) drove the only VW Jetta in the field to a fourth place finish. Earlier leader C. Holland rebounded from a pit stop and finished fifth.
The third race of the Nutty Buddy Enduro Series will be held on Sunday July 13 at 5:00PM.
The 358 Modifieds, Sportsman, Roadrunners, and Xcel Chassis 600 Modifieds will battle this Friday June 20. Gates open at 5:00PM, warm-ups start at 7:15PM, and the first qualifying event goes green at 7:45PM. Hillside SPCA and Oak Hill Farms are the show sponsors. From 3PM to 7:30PM it will be “Give a pint of blood night” presented by Bashore Trucking and Big Diamond Raceway. All blood donors will receive a $5 food voucher from the BDR refreshment stands.
The World of Outlaw Late Models make their first ever visit to BDR on Wednesday June 25 as part of The Great Northern Tour.
