MINERSVILLE, PA - One of Big Diamond Speedway's most prestigious events - the Georgie Stevenson Memorial - returns this year on Sunday, July 3.
The Minersville, Pa., clay oval hosts the 31st running of the Georgie Stevenson Memorial event as part of a doubleheader Independence Day weekend of racing. The 2011 edition of the Georgie Stevenson features a 40-lap, $4,000-to-win extra-distance feature following qualifying events for The Station House 358-Modifieds. Joining the powerful small-blocks are the U.S.S. Achey Sportsman (qualifying and 20-lap feature) and Wooden Keg Tavern Roadrunners (qualifying and 20-lap feature).
Ken's Tire, with locations in Cressona, Pa., Pottsville, Pa., and Frackville, Pa., is the event's presenting sponsor, bringing the Monster Truck Big Foot for display and a short exhibition. A gigantic fireworks extravaganza is planned for the evening as well. The 358-Modified winner earns a guaranteed starting spot in the October Short Track SuperNationals at Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood, N.Y.
Grandstand admission is $20 (Adults), $17 (Seniors & Military), $8 (Kids 6-12) and FREE for those five years of age and under. Pit admission for members is $30 and $40 for non-members. Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7:55 p.m. and racing at 8:15 p.m.
The Georgie Stevenson 358-Modified event will feature an open draw for position with a redraw of top heat finishers. All 358-Modified teams will receive 150 show-up points for their participation. The Sportsman and Roadrunner races are regular points-paying races. Drivers are not required to have a Big Diamond pit license for this show. Regular Big Diamond weekly rules will be in effect for all divisions.
The Georgie Stevenson Memorial returns after an absence of one year at the speedway. Georgie Stevenson was a young and avid Big Diamond fan, who supported the track along with his family every week. Georgie battled cancer and sadly passed away at the age of 12. He worked hard to raise money for cancer research and at the same time loved the sport of auto racing. The first Georgie Stevenson Memorial event was contested in at Big D in 1980.
Craig Von Dohren of Boyertown, Pa., leads all drivers with six Georgie Stevenson Memorial 358 victories. The most recent winner (2009) was Keith Hoffman of Whitehall, Pa. Hoffman has won the event four times, tied with legendary Fred Rahmer on the all-time list.
The month of July brings touring divisions to Big Diamond.
Preceding the Georgie Stevenson Memorial on Friday, July 1 is a complete program featuring the 358-Modifieds, Sportsman, Roadrunners and first '11 appearance by Doug Borger's touring XCel 600 Modifieds.
