Decker and "the Doctor" Dominate 358-Modified Twin Twenties

Danny Johnson and Billy Decker Continue Small Block Success at NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week XLI

SYRACUSE, N. Y. - Oct. 6, 2012 - Four-time defending Gander Mountain 150 Champion Billy Decker is claiming qualifying events left and right, including Friday night's Twin 20s for Saturday's small block championship race.

Decker led the evening's 20-lap 358-Modified heat race from start to finish, demonstrating his prowess on the New York State Fairgrounds' Mile, after having earned earlier that morning the pole position in the Gander Mountain 150.

"We've got a good race car," said Decker, who brought the same car that took him through consecutive championships over recent years. this team does a great job. Year in and year out they come to Syracuse. "We've got the bar set pretty high; we want to be solid every time we go out on the race track."

Decker, who is also starting at the pole in the VP Small Engine Fuels 200 for the Big-Block Modifieds, gains extra experience by running both divisions, even if it makes for a busy week.

"I wasn't extremely happy with how we were getting through the holes in (turn) 3, so we made a few changes and applied them to the Big Block, so now we're taking it one step further and applying it to the small block race tomorrow," Decker said. "We'll see what happens."

Clearly the trial-and-error modifications worked at the Friday Night Lights events, helping Decker to also win his heat in the Big-Block Modified Triple 20s.

However, given the action-packed schedule of NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week, which runs this year from Wednesday, Oct. 3, through Sunday, Oct. 7, and includes races from six premier traveling series, Decker said he wouldn't be able to double up without the support of his team.

"I'm very fortunate to be surrounded by a big group of guys that are very good," Decker said. "You have to have the man power and we're very fortunate to have that, because the man power is what makes it work."

The second Twin 20 qualifier for the Gander Mountain 150 spelled victory for "the Doctor" Danny Johnson, who also lead all 20 laps of his heat. "It's a nice hotrod I have, but anything can happen. With these races, it doesn't matter how good you are, or how good your team is, if you don't have Lady Luck with you, it doesn't matter how prepared you are."

The top 12 cars which have not already earned top spots through time trials qualify for Saturday's championship. Johnson's time, second only to Decker's, had already qualified him for the Gander Mountain 150, but the race did allow Andy Bachetti, Mat Williamson, Wayne Jelley, Tim Sears, Jr., Jeremy Wilder, Matt Sheppard, Matt Billings, Rich Laubach, Larry Wight, Marc Johnson, Brian MacDonald and Willy Decker to transfer to the final round. Twin 20s round 2 competitors Tim McCreadie, who placed second, and Tim Fuller, fifth, were already qualified based on time trial results.

In Decker's heat, Ronnie Johnson and Billy Dunn finished second and third respectively, but both earned top spots through time trials. The first Twin 20 Gander Mountain 150 heat qualified Ryan Godown, Jimmy Blewett, Stewart Friesen, Neal Williams, Jimmy Horton, Roy Bresnahan, Tim Hindly, Bobby Varin Vic Coffey, Rich Scagliotta, Mario Clair, and Kenny Tremont, Jr.
