NAPA AUTO PARTS THUNDER ON THE HILL RACING SERIES PRESENTED BY LEE MYLES CONTINUES. . . . . .
STEVE BUCKWALTER, JOSH WELLER & MIKE GULAR SWEEP TRIPLE CROWN THUNDER THRILLER WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA . . . . . . . . A field of eighty race cars filled the Grandview Speedway pits for the first time presentation of the Triple Crown Thunder Thriller on Wednesday night. This event marked the fourth race of the 2009 NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series presented by Lee Myles Transmission and Auto Care. On the program were ARDC Wingless Midgets, URC Sprints and the 358 Modifieds. Steve Buckwalter of Royersford, PA was the star of the ARDC feature, starting eighteenth and going on to win the 25 lap feature. In the Rislone URC Sprint feature, Josh Weller of Mertztown, PA charged from eleventh to win that feature as Mike Gular held off a determined Jimmy Horton to take top honors in the 358 Modified feature event. More then thirty-five Living Legend Drivers & Owners, representing ARDC, URC and the Grandview Modifieds were on hand for a special meet and greet with the race fans.
The URC Sprint heat race events were won by Jimmy Reppert, Dave Gable and Kramer Williamson as Justin Collett took the win in the "B" Main. For the 358 Modifieds, Doug Manmiller, Jeff Strunk and Craig VonDohren won the heat race events as Brad Missimer won the consolation.
The opening main event of the triple 25's saw the ARDC Wingless Midgets take to the one-third mile speedway. Cory Becker was the early race leader with Dusty Herstand in the chase along with Scott Zipp. By lap seven, Tracy Readinger was in the hunt, now racing third and closing in on Herstand. Deep in the pack, Steve Buckwalter was on a charge from his eighteenth place starting position. By lap eleven, Buckwalter was fourth and closing on the top three.
With the halfway sign showing, Becker remained the pacesetter over Readinger, Herstand, Buckwalter and Zipp. On lap fifteen, Buckwalter was racing in third and closing on the leaders. Lap sixteen was the turning point of the race as Buckwalter made an inside pass to advance from third into the lead. Buckwalter maintained a comfortable lead until lap twenty-three when the yellow was displayed for a multi-car crash in turn three, involving several of the top five cars. The field was now set for a two lap shootout.
When green flag racing resumed, Buckwalter remained the paces-setter Brett Arndt in the runner-up spot along with Ryan Watt. Buckwalter scored the victory with Brett Arndt second, Ryan Watt third, Dusty Herstand fourth and Scott Zipp fifth.
The Rislone URC Sprints were then called to the speedway. As the field took the green flag Kramer Williamson was the race leader but as the field entered turn one, Tim Hogue spun, collecting several cars including Fred Rahmer, Bryn Gohn, JJ Grasso and Danny Massey. URC point leader JJ Grasso was done for the night along with 410 sprint standout Fred Rahmer.
On the restart, Williamson set the pace for the first two laps with Chris Coyle taking the lead on lap three. Coyle and Williamson were in a heated battle for the lead and by lap seven, Coyle firmly had the lead. On lap eight, the caution flag was thrown, this time for six time URC Champion Curt Michael who spun in turn on, involving Kyle Purks and Randy West. When racing resumed, Coyle remained the leader until lap thirteen when Kramer Williamson returned to the lead spot. Williamson, Coyle, Josh Weller, Trevor Lewis and Nick Schlauch Jr were the top five as the field passed for the halfway sign.
The action started to heat up as Trevor Lewis tried to move into the top three. Out of nowhere, Josh Weller found some power and charged into second, now chasing down race leader Kramer Williamson. On lap eighteen, Weller took the lead followed by Williamson, Trevor Lewis, Coyle and Schlauch. With just two laps to go, Trevor Lewis charged into second and began to reel in Weller as the race leader was coming up on slower traffic. With the white flag waiving, Lewis was now of the rear bumper of Weller. Charging into turn three, Weller took the outside lane closing the door on Lewis.
With the checker flag waiving, Weller took the win, his second career URC victory and his second URC win at Grandview Speedway. Trevor Lewis driving the Scott McClaren owned sprinter finished second over Kramer Williamson, Nick Schlauch Jr. and Chris Coyle.
The final twenty-five lap feature of the night was for the modifieds. At the drop of the green, pole sitter Jimmy Horton was the early leader but as the field went into turn one, Ray Swinehart spun with Craig VonDohren making contact. On the restart, Mike Gular had the jump this time taking the lead over Jimmy Horton. On lap three, Horton returned as the race leader with Terry Meitzler, Jeff Strunk and Duane Howard in the hunt. As the field passed on lap eight, Gular was offering another strong challenge to Horton for the lead.
Billy Pauch, driving the Glenn Hyneman #126 brought out the yellow on lap ten with a flat tire. Pauch was running sixth at the time. The green flag fell to restart the race this time Mike Gular had the jump with Horton now chasing the leader with Jeff Strunk third.
As the field passed for the halfway sign, Gular, Horton, Strunk, Meitzler and Duane Howard were the top five. On lap seventeen, Horton again edged closer to Gular looking for an opportunity to make the pass.
A yellow flag on lap twenty-one brought the field together once again. On the restart, Gular had a strong run into turn one as Horton dove to the bottom and Jeff Strunk took a look to the far outside. Off of turn two, Gular had the fast line as Horton had to give up the chase for the lead and protect his hold on second. For the final two laps, Gular maintained his lead to score the win as Jimmy Horton finished second followed by Jeff Strunk, Terry Meitzler and Duane Howard.
