90TH THUNDER SERIES EVENT DRAWS BIG CROWD & BEATS THE WEATHER, AGAIN
TIM FULLER & BRETT HEARN SHARE TRAFFIC JAM VICTORIES THURSDAY NIGHT AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
For the 90th time since 1990, the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series presented by Lee Myles Transmissions delivered another fan favorite racing that attracted a huge crowd to the "hill". Even with a bad weather forecast and rain falling all around, the show did go on and it was a huge success. This first time presentation of the World of Outlaws Late Models and Big Block Modifieds was a hit with the fans. Forty-two Late Models and thirty-two Modifieds left the pits at near capacity. At the end of the Twin 40's TRAFFIC JAM, Brett Hearn of Vernon, NJ collected $4,000 for his modified win as Tim Fuller of Watertown, NY earned $7,000 for his win in the WoO Late Models feature event.
WoO Late Models Time Trials opened the racing program with Josh Richards of Shinnston, WV setting fast time with a 15.117. The four heat race events were won by Josh Richards, Tim Fuller, Steve Francis and Vic Coffey. The two WoO Late Model "B" Main events were won by Shane Clanton and Rick Briggs. In Modified qualifying, heat winners included Billy Pauch, Keith Hoffman and Rick Laubach with Ray Swinehart winning the consolation.
An added attraction of the night, was the BPG Racing/Chad Sinon Motorsports Late Model/Modified Challenge, a six lap CASH DASH featuring the seven heat race winners of the two divisions. Rick Laubach set the early pace, but eventually, it was Vic Coffey who took the win and collected the $1,000 first place prize. Laubach finished second to earn $300 as Rick Eckert collected $200 for third. Each car that took the green flag in DASH collected $100 thanks to the sponsorship of BPG Racing and Chad Sinon.
With fireworks bursting in air, the twenty-four car modified starting field roared off of turn four with Ryan Godown immediately taking the lead. Mike Gular, winner of the July Thunder Show followed in second with Brett Hearn third. Godown was very impress in the early going, but a yellow flag for Ray Swinehart on lap six allowed the field to re-group. On the restart, Hearn passed Gular and moved into second as he tried to reel in the leader.
A Godown and Hearn battle was quick to form with Billy Pauch racing in third. In the meantime, back in the pack, Craig VonDohren and Stewart Freisen were coming to the front.
The race continued caution free and at the halfway mark, Godown remained on the top followed by Brett Hearn, Craig VonDohren, Mike Gular and Billy Pauch.
On lap twenty-five, the caution was displayed for MeMe DeSantis who stopped on the speedway. The two-abreast restart offered Hearn the opportunity to pass Godown for the lead. One lap later, the caution was again displayed, this time for Rick Laubach. On the restart, Hearn once again held the lead followed by Godown, VonDohren, Gular, Pauch and Matt Sheppard.
The battle was for second through fourth and Godown had his full with Gular and VonDohren in the chase.
A late race caution sent Godown to the pits, and shortly after Craig VonDohren returned to the pits with a flat tire. When green flag racing resumed, all bets were off.
Hearn was the leader with just five laps remaining as Mike Gular, Jeff Strunk and Matt Sheppard moved into the hunt.
In the closing laps, Gular and Strunk made a late race run for the lead, but Hearn was not to be denied this Victory. Gular was second followed by Jeff Strunk, Matt Sheppard and Sean Merkel.
The Late Models then took to the Grandview Speedway and Tim Fuller set the pace from the outside front road. Clint Smith followed in second with Steve Francis third. Also in the hunt was D.J. Moyer who was in a battle with Austin Hubbard.
At the halfway mark, Fuller was the top gun followed by Francis, Clint Smith, D.J. Myers and Hubbard.
Fuller continued to stretch out a huge lead and Steve Francis was unable to reel in the leader. For the balance of the race, Fuller remained the man to beat however, he was never offered a challenge. Fuller, a previous TRAFFIC JAM winner, driving a Big Block Modified went on to take the victory over Steve Francis, Clint Smith, D.J. Myers and Austin Hubbard.
