By Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
Jerry Higbie, "The Statesman From Slate Hill" has filed an entry to take part in the season opener this coming weekend at the famous Fonda Fairgrounds for the annual "Ice Jam" event. Higbie will once again climb behind the wheel of the family owned, signature numbered 97 Bicknell Chassied/Precision powered big block to battle the forty plus entries expected in for the lid-lifter.The 40-lap feature feature event for the Modifieds will pay a cool $4,000.00 to the winner and all of the Fonda track regulars and a host of outside invaders are expected in for the event.
Higbie made his second Pennsylvania appearance of the 2008 racing season two weeks ago at the Big Diamond Raceway located in Forestville, Pennsylvania. The event was the initial race of the season for Big Diamond Raceway and a stout field of 52-Modifieds were on hand to battle in a 40-lap event that found Pennsylvania hot-shoe Duane Howard claiming the $4,000.00 winning prize for his efforts. Garden State Modified legend Jimmy Horton was a close second. The star-studded event found the popular Higbie starting the event from the 13th position on the starting grid and racing to a solid 9th place finish at the conclusion of the race.
A host of drivers including Higbie took part in a close practice session on Monday at the Orange County Fair Speedway. While Higbie suffered from some braking problems early on in the session, once sorted out, was able to constantly click off lap times in the 20.7 range on the big 5/8 mile hard clay racing surface. Brett Hearn and Chuck McKee were reported to be the fastest of the cars at the speedway with times in the 20.5 range
This coming Thursday April 10th,  will find Jerry Higbie, along with fellow Accord Modified drivers Andy Bachetti and Danny Tyler, joining Accord Speedway Announcer/PR Media Man Steve Pados for TV interviews with Lindsay Liquori at Cable 6 out of Middletown, New York.
Jerry Higbie will also be among the drivers vying for the feature event win when the ARDC Midgets arrive at the Accord Speedway to do battle on July 11th. Higbie, who took his first ride in a Midget race car in early January at the Chili Bowl and came away from the Tulsa event with a heat race win, will once again pair with car owner Corey Tucker to test his skills at the newly revamped quarter mile facility in the Midgets. Tucker, a car chief on the Penske owned Kurt Busch Sprint Cup Series car, was very pleased with Higbie's initial run in the Midgets at the Chili Bowl and is happy to provide a car for the popular dirt track star.
Higbie's aggressive 2008 racing schedule will find him in the thick of the action as he prepares to run for the Accord Speedway and Orange County Fair Speedway Championships this year. He will also be challenging for the ROC title. For the Accord and ROC events, Higbie will race his signature numbered 97 cars and for his assault on OCFS and select WRG Series Races, Higbie will once again strap himself into the Team Shaver numbered 47 equipment. Sponsorship for the Teams comes from a great group of loyal sponsors who have supported Higbie throughout his successful career. Mid-City Transit, Mr K's Carpet Service, Behrent's Speed Center, SKJ Towing, BadaBing Pizza, and Embroidery Wizard have all lent their support to the 97 cars, and Beaverkill Trout Hatchery, Superior Building Supply, Woodburne Lawn & Garden, and Frieghtliner Trucks of Newburgh lend their support to the Shaver Team. In addition to his Big Block rides, Higbie will be slipping behind the belts of the Affordable Transmission numbered 17 for a run at the 358 Small Block title at OCFS.
Jerry Higbie Racing would like to thank the entire racing community for their support and well wishes as the team prepares for a great season in racing this year.
